Russia’s
recent decision to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus, has brought the
spotlight back on this practice, first deployed by the United States,
which to this day has nuclear weapons stationed in Belgium, Germany,
Italy, The Netherlands and Türkiye under so-called “nuclear umbrella”
arrangements. So the NPT PrepCom provided a great opportunity to ask
some pointed questions and condemn this irresponsible behaviour.
In addition to calling out nuclear sharing, the ICAN team
and many of our campaigners are also attending PrepCom this year to
remind diplomats of the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons, the
risks they pose, and to rally support for the UN Treaty on the
Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
If you’d
like to get some more updates on what we’re doing here, please
join us for a live chat with RCW’s Ray Acheson on ICAN's
instagram, tomorrow Thursday at 15:30 CEST. During
this informal but informative conversation we'll cover what to expect
- or not - from the NPT, what we’re working on while we’re here and
how the TPNW complements and reinforces the NPT, and offers the best
hope of achieving real progress towards a world forever free of
nuclear weapons.
