Anonymous, As if fracking wasn't bad enough, now the Trump administration wants to allow highly volatile, liquified fracked gas to be transported on our railroads too. Tell the Trump administration you don't want dirty, dangerous gas careening through our communities in railroad cars. The Trump administration is proposing to allow a dangerous form of gas known as liquefied natural gas to be transported across America's railroads.1 Imagine a train pulling up to 100 railroad cars with millions of gallons of dangerous liquefied natural gas through our communities and neighborhoods. To create liquefied natural gas, an already explosive gas is condensed into a potent liquid fuel at extremely low temperatures. This process makes the final product far too dangerous to crisscross the nation on America's train lines. Allowing this proposal to move forward will inevitably lead to more fracking and more risks to public health and our environment. Earlier this year, national health experts called a similar proposal "a high potential for catastrophe," and noted that "a derailment, a malfunction or a terrorist attack could result in the release of liquefied natural gas, which could lead to an explosion and a fire that first responders could probably not control. The risk of severe harm, including loss of life, is too high."2 Sadly, we've already gotten a glimpse of the dangers posed by shipping flammable fossil fuels by rail: An oil train explosion in Lac-Mégantic, Canada, killed 47 local residents and completely razed nearby neighborhoods. Submit your comment to let the Trump administration know we don't want highly explosive gas being transported through our communities and neighborhoods. Thanks for everything you do, Hannah Collazo |
