We’re sure you’ve heard all about the unusual behavior of some animals this summer, from orcas to otters, but we’re here to tell you about a story that’s not in the headlines.
Sea lions on the California coast have been washing up on the beach and then biting people who came close to them. Totally unlike the cute, entertaining animals that we typically see.
Scientists soon found that the plankton sea lions eat had consumed toxic algae, and then infected the sea lions with a neurotoxin causing seizures, muscle spasms, and dehydration. Many of the sick sea lions died, and those who didn’t lashed out at humans in fear.
John, this might just be the beginning. That toxic algae affecting wildlife has been blooming out of control in the Pacific Ocean, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has said that this is directly linked to climate change and pollution.
It’s going to take all of us working together to fight this fight, John. We’re glad you’re with us.
