Dear Neighbor, We were busy in Washington these past two weeks, but it was great to be back home last Saturday to meet with constituents in North Long Beach at our Barragán on Your Block event. | It was great to sit down with our neighbors and talk about the historic investments to address climate change, advance critical infrastructure projects, and bring more good-paying jobs to our communities. We also discussed how House Democrats increased federal funding for cities like Long Beach to address homelessness and develop urban parks. | House Democrats Invest in American Communities Did you know, thanks to House Democrats, Insulin is now $35 a month, you can save up to $30 per month on your internet, and Veterans now have access to additional healthcare services if they were exposed to toxic substances like burn pits? Taking this survey will sign you up for future news and updates from my office. | One Year Anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act | It's been one year since House Democrats passed the most consequential bill to jumpstart our fight against climate change and build a clean energy economy, the Inflation Reduction Act. In the year since President Biden signed the bill, we've seen record job growth and wage increases, and lowered our inflation rate faster than other countries. In California alone, this bill provided over $11 BILLION to create thousands of new jobs, particularly for Latino communities. Last week, I joined Climate Power, League of Conservation Voters, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to talk about some of the great things the bill has accomplished. | Urged President Biden to Expand Parole and Work Permits | Introduced the HEAL Act with Rep. Jayapal and Sen. Booker | Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) and I introduced the HEAL Act along with Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ). Everyone deserves access to healthcare, regardless of immigration status. Our bill would allow states to include undocumented immigrants in Medicaid and CHIP, and remove the 5-year waiting period for Medicare benefits for lawfully present immigrants. | Celebrated Latino Conservation Week | I recently reintroduced a resolution to designate the third week of July as "Latino Conservation Week." It's more important than ever that we recognize the unequal access to parks and nature that Latino communities often experience. In some of our neighborhoods, children share their backyards and playgrounds with oil refineries and major highways that threaten our environmental and public health. | Protect Military Families from Deportation | During this last work period in Washington, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus held a press conference on our efforts to protect families with immigrant service members from deportation. No one sacrifices more for our county than our military members and their families. They deserve to live without fear in the country they've sworn to protect. | PACT Act Care Now Available! | Congress passed the PACT Act last year, a historic bill which makes it easier for Veterans to receive healthcare if they were exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, or toxic substances. If you or someone you know is a Veteran and has been exposed to toxic substances, you can visit va.gov/PACT to file a claim. There's no deadline to apply for PACT Act benefits, but if you file your PACT Act claim - or intent to file - by August 9th, 2023, you can receive benefits backdated to August 2022. | Floor Speech on Republican's Demonization of Immigrants | House Republicans introduced a bill two weeks ago that would defund schools that opened their doors as shelters for migrants. This is another example of MAGA extremists who have taken over the part and only want to demonize immigrants. They claim to want to protect children, yet the Republican governor of Texas installed buoys in the Rio Grande River, and instructed agents to push kids back into the water. We won't let them continue to divide our country. I went to the House floor to speak out against this horrific bill. Watch my speech here. | Free Lunch Over Summer Break | FACT: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) operates a nationwide school lunch program that's also available in the summer. INFO: If you need food assistance over the summer when schools are not in session, be sure to visit USDA's Summer Meals for Kids Finder and find a location closest to you. | Save up to $30 per Month on Internet at GetInternet.gov | House Democrats included $14 BILLION in last year's Infrastructure Law to provide affordable internet to every household in the country. Over 30,000 households in our district can save up to $30 a month on broadband.
