Federal court blocks Biden administration's asylum ban

Last week, a federal court blocked the Biden administration's asylum ban in a ruling that will start taking effect in less than 14 days. We're proud to have co-represented the plaintiffs in this lawsuit and will continue to defend people's legal and human right to seek asylum. Read our full statement.

IN THE NEWS
Keren Zwick, NIJC's director of litigation, said the court's ruling is "welcome and expected" in an interview with Politico.

Lawyers say efforts to help asylum seekers in custody have been derailed

As the U.S. government has actively tried to block people's access to asylum, NIJC attorneys experienced obstacles as they tried to provide consultations and representation to people undergoing expedited asylum screenings in U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody.

As a result, NIJC has made the difficult decision to discontinue providing legal services to people seeking asylum in CBP custody.

IN THE NEWS NIJC's Lisa Koop and Ruth Pebror spoke to The New York Times to give a glimpse into how nearly impossible it is for people in border patrol custody to access lawyers.

Several members of Congress have written a joint letter urging the administration to stop the expedition of credible fear interviews in CBP custody in response to the increased difficulties.

Gov. Abbott must be held accountable for violent anti-immigrant actions

We call on the Biden administration to investigate and hold Governor Abbott accountable for abhorrent mistreatment of people seeking safety at the border.

87 Congressmen have written a letter to the White House jointly calling for the administration to prioritize people's civil rights and stop inhumane, anti-immigrant policies such as Govenor Abbott's Operation Lonestar.

People with DACA renew their status at free legal clinics

We're proud that our recent DACA renewal clinics with Greenberg Traurig LLP, Dykema, and General Motors were a success! Thanks to our incredible staff and pro bono partners, dozens of DACA recipients have renewed their temporary status and the important benefits that help them thrive. As the future of DACA is uncertain, we will keep advocating for permanent protections for all undocumented people. See more about our upcoming DACA renewal clinics and appointments
