August 1 Update – Former President, and current leader of the fossil fuel fascist party, Donald Trump was indicted Tuesday on charges he led a conspiracy to overthrow the 2020 election results — which directly led to the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. 2021.

This is the latest, and most serious charge to date against Trump, and the clearest indictment yet that makes clear why Trump must be barred from federal office under the 14th amendment. Trump, as usual, is responding with more lies and propaganda. He’s also using this indictment to raise money for his Presidential campaign, which in turn is spending most of its cash paying Trump’s legal team.

We have to break the cycle of crime and un-accountability. Disqualifying Trump from the ballot wont deprive him of a trial or due process. But it will make it clear that you can’t use the democratic electoral process as a piggybank to fund your violent fascist aspirations. The insurrection on January 6, 2021, incited by former President Donald Trump, directly attacked our democratic institutions. His actions on that day and his continued propagation of the "Big Lie" around the 2020 election results pose a significant threat to the integrity of our democratic processes.

The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution provides a clear path to protect our democracy from those who would undermine it. Section 3 of the Amendment states that any person who has taken an oath to support the Constitution, but has subsequently engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, is disqualified from holding office.

Donald Trump, as a former president, has taken such an oath. His actions leading up to and on January 6 incited an insurrection. Nine different federal judges have blamed Trump for the events of January 6.

The 14th Amendment has disqualified individuals from holding public office before. Couy Griffin was removed from his position as an elected county commissioner in New Mexico for his role in the January 6 attack.

We believe that the same standard should apply to Donald Trump. His treasonous actions have demonstrated a clear disregard for the Constitution and the democratic principles that it upholds.

Our democracy is precious. It’s the foundation of our freedom and our way of life. We must protect it from those who would seek to undermine it. Sign the petition to Congress: Disqualify Trump from running for President – it's in the Constitution.
