Dear Friend,
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is committed to reaching people in crisis as quickly and efficiently as possible. We are always looking for ways to refine and innovate our processes to ensure lifesaving care in the face of dire emergencies—even those that don’t make the headlines. That includes the inaccessibility of essential care for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) for people in low- and middle-income countries.
According to World Health Organization, approximately 80 percent of annual mortality related to NCDs occurs in low- and middle-income countries. In many of these places, MSF teams see how compounding factors like conflict and economic instability make seeking care difficult—or even impossible—for people with NCDs. That is why, in addition to providing care, MSF is researching how to bridge this critical gap with the use of digital health interventions.
Lebanon has experienced a sharp rise in the burden of NCDs, including diabetes, over the last decade. In 2021, MSF launched the Digital Therapeutics (DTx) for Diabetes project in Greece and Lebanon to determine how digital health interventions can be used to empower diabetes patients to self-manage their condition. After years of fine-tuning, we plan to pilot the DTx app in Lebanon this year.
When launched, MSF’s DTx app will provide vital support to diabetes patients in Lebanon. DTx for Diabetes aims to improve patient self-management by providing remote monitoring and education to patients living with diabetes.
MSF has an immense opportunity to improve health access and quality of care through digital health interventions like DTx for Diabetes. Data from the International Diabetes Federation predicts that the prevalence of diabetes in Lebanon among people ages 20-79 will jump from 396 per 1000 people to 469 per 1000 by 2030. We need your help to ensure our patients in Lebanon and worldwide can benefit from our groundbreaking work, and to continue innovating on behalf of our patients around the globe.
