Hi John,
BP announced yesterday that it has made £2 billion of profits in the last three months. In those three months scientists have predicted that the world will likely hit 1.5 degrees of global heating for the first time by 2027 – a threshold which will see catastrophic impacts if surpassed for good. With extreme heat and deadly floods currently sweeping the globe, these hideous profits show that corporate power is out of control.
The global south experiences disproportionate human and economic costs of extreme weather. As some of the biggest drivers of global emissions, our research shows that Shell and BP alone could end up owing the global south over $3 trillion in climate reparations.
It’s time to make these corporations pay up for the loss and damage they’re responsible for in the global south.

** Saturday 23 September is Make Polluters Pay Action Day
------------------------------------------------------------
This day of action will see groups and individuals in the UK and around the world taking to the streets, while many more take action online.
Here in the UK, we’ll be demanding that, ahead of COP28, the UK prime minister commits to making UK-based fossil fuel giants contribute substantially to the Loss and Damage Fund agreed at COP27. It’s only fair that the biggest polluting industries pay up for the harm they've caused so that communities on the front lines of the climate crisis can access the vital support they need to recover and rebuild.
On Monday night we held a local actions workshop online – a big thank you to everyone who attended. It was incredibly inspiring to hear such a wide range of powerful action ideas taking shape around the country.
If you already know you’ll be taking action on 23 September, please add your action to this map ([link removed]) . This will help people find out what’s going on locally, and allow other groups and individuals from across the coalition to connect with you. The map will automatically update across all our partners’ websites. If you don’t know all the details yet - that’s fine! Add it anyway so people know something’s happening, and you can contact us to update it later.
If you want to join in something local, but can’t be an organiser, then check the map again at a later date, and find out what’s happening near you.
If you have any questions, or want to discuss the day of action at all, please contact
[email protected] (mailto:
[email protected]) . We’re always happy to chat. If you’re looking for inspiration, you can check out some of our handy guides ([link removed]) for taking action.
Keep an eye on your emails for more updates over the coming weeks.
We’ll be in touch soon with more information on things like how to take action online. In the meantime, feel free to get in touch with any questions.
See you on the streets!
