August 1, 2023, will be remembered as a momentous day in American history — the corrective response to January 6, 2021.

The indictment of Donald J. Trump is the appropriate, and necessary, response to Trump’s attempted coup against the United States of America.

The indictment of Trump revisits the story laid bare by the congressional January 6 Committee:

What happened on January 6 was the culmination of a multi-pronged plot to overturn the legitimate results of the November 2020 election, carried out at the behest and through the actions of Trump and his lackeys.

Today’s indictment is vital to establish basic accountability for the crimes Trump and his confederates committed and to reinforce the basic principle that nobody is above the law.

This indictment, while fully justified on the facts and law, was not inevitable. For various reasons, some suggested the Department of Justice should not investigate and prosecute. But the work that we all did — demanding justice and accountability, supporting and amplifying the breakthrough work of the January 6 Committee — helped stiffen spines.

Now it’s time to reassert first principles.

Add your name to show that you endorse the principle that nobody is above the law and that Donald Trump should be held accountable in a court of law for his actions to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 election.

It is also important to recall that Trump’s coup attempt did not occur in a vacuum. It was a product of a sustained assault against democracy preceding Trump’s election, intensified by Trump and MAGA forces during the Trump regime, and continuing today.

Our job is not just to support this prosecution, but to intensify our work to protect, defend, and advance our democracy from the multiple threats it continues to face.

Today is a grave day, but it should also reinforce our commitment to democracy and the rule of law. We have fended off great threats to our democracy, but we have much more to do. I look forward to doing that work — and prevailing — with you.

For democracy,

- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
