John — Just moments ago, a federal grand jury indicted Donald J. Trump with four new felony charges related to the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Let me repeat that: A former President of the United States, and the leading candidate for the Republican nomination for the presidency, was charged with four criminal counts: conspiracy to defraud, conspiracy to obstruct, obstruction and conspiracy to deprive Americans of their rights — that is, the right to vote and have their vote counted. All to stay in power and overturn the will of the people.

This is unprecedented, John.

Through our investigation and the dogged work on the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, we uncovered damning evidence that Donald Trump conspired to defraud the American people and deprive them of their right to vote, in order to stay in power.

We should expect Trump to react the way he always has to these indictments: lies, attacks, and excuses. And we should expect his cronies to do the same. Already, Speaker McCarthy is spewing Trump talking points and trying to undermine confidence in our justice system.

But as always, we will continue to hold Trump and his enablers to account.

Now more than ever, we need leaders who have proven themselves able to withstand Trump’s lies and falsehoods and deliver the truth for the sake of our democracy. That’s why I’m asking:

I’m not afraid to stand up to forces working to undermine our democracy — even if it means standing up to Donald J. Trump and MAGA world. I’m ready to continue that work in the U.S. Senate. Will you chip in to our campaign so we can continue to stand strong and prevent demagogues like Trump from seizing the reins of power?
