John,
Special Counsel Jack Smith just took a huge step to defend our democracy:
Donald Trump federally indicted for attempting to overturn an election and exploiting the violent insurrection on January 6th
This is a big deal.
A year ago, few people truly expected that Donald Trump would be held accountable for his crimes. Now he has been — from his illegal hush money payments, to his cavalier treatment of American national security and classified documents, to his most egregious crime of trying to block the peaceful transfer of power and keep himself in office despite losing the 2020 election.
All of Trump’s indictments are important. But this is the most crucial one yet.
If our country allowed Donald Trump to incite his supporters to try to overturn the 2020 election and rise up against the government without facing legal consequences, the continued viability of our democracy would be in question.
Thankfully, that is not our reality. Jack Smith and his team at the Department of Justice carefully assembled all the evidence to make an overwhelmingly strong case that Trump bears responsibility for the scheme to overturn election results and for the attack on the Capitol.
It’s important that we not take this indictment and its significance for granted.
CREW has been loudly making the argument that Donald Trump needed to face accountability for all of his crimes for years now in complaints, letters, the press, and on social media. We have been releasing report after report about his responsibility for the January 6th attack. Any role we played in laying the groundwork for this indictment that is so crucial to our republic is incredibly significant.
