Greenland’s ice sheet disappeared once — and it’s on track to have another meltdown sooner than expected

A new study out of the University of Vermont has dangerous implications for the future of our coastal cities.
Greenland, as we’ve known it, has been predominantly covered by an ice sheet spanning almost two million square kilometers. But after studying an ice core (a.k.a. frozen time capsules that allow scientists to reconstruct climate far into the past) beneath Greenland’s ice sheet, they found that a large part of the country was ice-free around 400,000 years ago.
This study completely upends decades of climate knowledge. Though we previously believed Greenland’s always been covered in this ice sheet, the University of Vermont’s research shows that moderate, natural warming led to large-scale ice melting — melting that led to a 4.6 foot rise in our sea levels.
But here’s the thing: Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are 1.5 times higher than they were when Greenland’s ice sheet melted the first time. And with anti-climate leaders in office trying to stall SEEC’s climate action, the clock to another meltdown is ticking away.
If Greenland experiences another meltdown, our sea levels will rise by 23 feet. That means cities like Amsterdam, New Orleans, Venice, and New York could very well be underwater before we know it.
We’re not going to let our coastal cities be collateral in the ongoing fight to reduce our carbon emissions.
