It’s time to apply for Poynter’s 2024 Leadership Academy for Women in Media ([link removed]) ! Join a cohort of more than 550 leaders in news and media who have transformed their careers — and created a ripple effect in the journalism industry — through this competitive Poynter program.
When we surveyed hundreds of alumni earlier this year about the long-term impact of the program, three themes emerged from their responses:
• Confidence. The women’s leadership academy helped cohort members beat back imposter syndrome, advocate for themselves and their teams, and even feel secure staying in — and shaping — the journalism industry, despite its challenges.
• Clout. Alumni reported that going through the academy elevated their status at their organization, with colleagues looking to them for solutions and seeking their feedback on everything from hiring to company strategy.
• Connections. Joining an instant professional network was most frequently mentioned as the biggest benefit of the program. Alumni get amplified when they succeed, buoyed when they falter and receive practical support during the regular ups and downs of media leadership.
Are you ready to gain confidence, clout and connections? Apply for the 2024 Leadership Academy for Women in Media ([link removed]) by Friday, Sept. 8, 2023 (or forward to a friend you think should apply!).

Program details
We will host three leadership academies in 2024, each open to 30 participants: March 18-22; May 20-24; and Sept. 23-27. There is one application (which includes a letter of recommendation) to seat all three cohorts. Each program will take place in person at Poynter’s waterfront campus in sunny St. Petersburg, Florida.
Ideal candidates
Our program is designed for those who directly manage people and are within their first five years of formal leadership experience. We welcome all English-speaking women, including cis and trans women, as well as nonbinary and gender nonconforming journalists who are comfortable in a space that centers the experiences of women in media.
Instructor info
Kate Cox led the academy in 2023 and will return as program director in 2024. As the former editor-in-chief of nonprofit newsroom, The Counter, Cox oversaw special projects and edited numerous award-winning investigations. She has worked in every medium, from radio to TV and print to digital, and all sides of the newsroom, including editorial, development and revenue strategy.
Guest instructors and keynote speakers for 2024 will be announced next year. Recent keynotes include Sara Yasin, a managing editor at the Los Angeles Times; Tracie Powell, founder of The Pivot Fund and program alum; and Stephanie Mehta, CEO and chief content officer of Mansueto Ventures, the business media company that publishes Fast Company and Inc.
Key lessons
Each leadership academy is unique, with different instructors, new workshops and a diverse mix of participants from all over the world. We provide mentoring in group sessions and one on one. Key lessons include how to:
• Find better work-life chemistry
• Tackle difficult conversations and conflict with your boss, your peers and your direct reports
• Navigate ethical issues in the newsroom
• Prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in hiring, retention and promotion
• Advocate, and negotiate, for yourself and others
• Delegate with purpose
• Create psychologically safe spaces and build resiliency on your team
