This is a significant step in the right direction, but our work is far from complete.

Friends -

For too long, the criminal justice system has been built to criminalize people of color and Indigenous people, disproportionately sending them to prison for minor offenses, like marijuana possession, and entrapping them in a vicious cycle of incarceration.

But today, in Minnesota, we are changing that system by legalizing the use of marijuana. This is a significant step in the right direction, but our work is far from complete. Let me explain:

While today is a major victory for Minnesotans, there still remains a lot of work to be done at the federal level. I’ve said this before and I will say it again, we need to legalize marijuana nationwide and expunge records for cannabis-related offenses.

That’s why I’m a proud sponsor of the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act or the MORE Act. This bill would not only decriminalize marijuana at the national level but it would also remove marijuana from the list of scheduled substances under the Controlled Substances Act and eliminate criminal penalties for an individual who manufactures, distributes, or possesses marijuana.

Over 70% of people 18-44 years old support legalizing marijuana nationally. And as more and more states like Minnesota take their own steps to legalize marijuana, I hope that the federal government takes action as well.

Because the only way we can begin to repair the harm caused in communities across the country is to end the War on Drugs and invest intentionally in education, housing, healthcare, and employment.

Today should be a day to celebrate the progress we’ve made in Minnesota. So please, enjoy today responsibly, and let’s continue the work to bring justice to so many Americans impacted by the War on Drugs.

In solidarity,

Ilhan Omar
