Team,
In June, the Supreme Court issued two decisions with major consequences for our democracy.
First, in Allen v. Milligan, the Court struck down Alabama’s congressional map for violating the Voting Rights Act by illegally diluting the power of Black voters. Now, Alabama has the chance to put in place new, fair maps with an additional majority-Black district before the next election – and other states like Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas could be required to draw new maps as well.
Then, in Moore v. Harper, the Court rejected a dangerous, right-wing legal theory that could have given state legislatures unchecked power to gerrymander, suppress voting rights, and even overturn legitimate election results.
In response, Attorney General Eric Holder said:
“It makes me a lot more confident that we’re going to have a fair election come 2024.”
