At a time that rates of online harassment are steadily increasing — a recent ADL survey found that 52 percent of American adults experienced online hate or harassment — these platforms say they want to protect users from hate and harassment, but again and again they neglect to deliver.

The report tells the story of Julie Gray, who helps run a Holocaust-education focused TikTok account with her Holocaust survivor husband. The popular account has been the target of severe antisemitic hate, or as Julie devastatingly puts it: “If you’re Jewish, you have to pay a fee to go on social, and that fee is trauma and hate.”

The new report card looks at the features tech platforms should be providing to protect users, from how responsive and effective they are when they communicate with people who need support after encountering harassment to how they set up their systems to block and filter out problematic content. As of now, for example, not one of these platforms offers a way for a target of abuse to speak to a live person for support, regardless of the level of severity or urgency of abuse they are experiencing.

TAKING ACTION WITH ADL

ADL will continue to push social media platforms to reduce online hate and harassment. This new report card lists a number of key recommendations; by taking these steps to support targets of hate, platforms can prove they are serious about providing real options and support for those affected by online hate.

You can take action to respond to harassment. If you encounter hate online, use ADL’s

We also ask you to speak out to urge Mark Zuckerberg, head of Meta (owner of two of the most pervasive social platforms — Facebook and Instagram) to do more to support victims of online hate, and to put people over profits.
