Dear John, It is unacceptable to stand by and watch the rising anti-2SLGBTQI discrimination, protests, and hate across Canada. At Egale, we are calling on all levels of government to take action and intervening in court cases to counter anti-2SLGBTQI and anti-trans hate facing our communities. In recent years, Canadian author and psychologist Jordan Peterson has spread hateful, misogynistic, and transphobic messages and misinformation on various digital platforms such as Twitter, and on a podcast featured on YouTube. After receiving complaints, the Ontario College of Psychologists concluded that Peterson had violated professional standards applicable to psychologists and ordered him to undergo a coaching program. Peterson refused to comply and has since taken the case to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice Divisional Court. Egale, alongside JusticeTrans, was granted intervenor status and participated in a full-day hearing this past June. We argued that professional regulatory bodies must be allowed to regulate discriminatory speech by their members. Our perspective ensured that the rights of 2SLGBTQI people are considered by the Court. |
