Dear Jack,
We’ve got big news to share with you. Save the Redwoods League is proud to share that we’ve secured an opportunity to acquire the remarkable 394-acre Russian River Redwoods [[link removed]] near Guerneville in Sonoma County. This incredible property includes a mile of frontage along the beautiful Russian River, and the beloved Clar Tree, one of the county’s oldest and tallest coast redwoods.
“This stretch of the Russian River is one of the most beloved scenic recreation areas in Northern California, and that’s due in large part to the redwoods that line its banks,” says Sam Hodder , League president and CEO. And we’re thrilled to be able to step in and protect this forest.
This project is big and we’re looking to raise $6.5 million for acquisition and project costs to purchase the property by September 30. [link removed]
The Clar Tree is the sole remaining old-growth redwood in this forest, towering above the others. This ancient giant is believed to be more than 2,000 years old, and is 16 feet in diameter and 278 feet tall. It reminds us what this forest can be. The Clar Tree is surrounded by younger redwoods that are regrowing from the roots of the ancient giants that populated what was once called the Silver Grove. Dozens of these second-growth trees are already about a century old, and aching for their chance to tower over the river once more.
Our goal is to transfer Russian River Redwoods to Sonoma County within a year to care for this property and to improve wildfire resilience and advance the forest toward old-growth form and function. Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District will support and help fund the transfer, and will receive a conservation easement and recreational covenant over the property to ensure long-term protection and to create an opportunity for future access.
