My name is Ashton, I’m 15 years old and a member of Sunrise Phoenix. I was at this morning's action at Rep. David Schweikert’s (R-AZ) office where dozens of Sunrisers called on our Congressman to support a critical heat relief bill. Today’s action left me feeling more inspired than ever. Here’s what you missed —

Sunrisers from across Arizona gathered to make our message clear: extreme heat is a climate disaster, and we need to be prepared for it. We demanded Rep. David Schweikert join 30 members of Congress in supporting the bipartisan heat relief bill and called on him to urge FEMA to designate extreme heat as a natural disaster. If this bill were to pass, it would create a $100 million financial assistance program for our communities that have endured deadly temperatures for the last month.

Today, we heard from community members who are on the frontlines of this crisis. Casey from Sunrise Tempe shared her experience living with chronic illnesses and talked about how the extreme heat makes her likely to faint, even when only outside for a few moments. Aswita talked about how it’s too unbearable to go outdoors and how difficult it is to not be able to spend time in the places she loves.

We’ve had 31 consecutive days of enduring over 110 degrees here in Phoenix. Arizonans are getting severe burns just from touching the pavement. I refuse to let the place that I call home become uninhabitable. Dozens of people have already died because of the heat — we need extreme heat relief NOW.

It was so powerful being in community with other Sunrisers this morning while we take on this crisis. But our fight continues — Rep. David Schweikert has still not committed to fulfilling our demands. That’s why we need your help signing our petition. >>
