Rural counties have some of the highest rates of opioid abuse and some of the lowest rates of access to treatment. The road to solving the opioid crisis in rural communities, picking up the pieces, and rebuilding is going to be a very long one. But there are solutions; we want to make sure you know about some of our hard-fought successes.
We're thankful for a strong White House who sees eye to eye with us that getting more folks into evidence-based treatment as well as curbing the supply of these drugs are both critically important.
To that end, we've helped secure investments in President Biden's 2023 and 2024 budgets that award $1.5 billion dollars to states, tribal lands, and territories to support actions to combat this crisis, including:
- $104 million dollars allocated for rural communities to create new sites to receive medication-assisted treatments and education and outreach about prevention and treatment services.
- $275 million to law enforcement to dismantle traffickers' finance operations and slow or stop their ability to conduct business.
- Issuing new sanctions on designated global trafficking entities, primarily in Mexico, which will disrupt fentanyl production and curb the supply from crossing our borders.
- And finally, recently, the FDA took the extraordinary step of making Narcan or naloxone - the medication that can reverse a potentially deadly opioid overdose - available over the counter without a prescription.
We're getting the policy solutions enacted that are making a huge difference in this crisis, but it's still a long road to victory. We wouldn't be able to continue this work without your help, so if you're able, we hope you'll consider chipping in $12 and help make a big impact in our own backyards.
In solidarity,
Tessa
