Hello,

This week, I discuss the connection between consciousness and intrinsic value. Then, I talk with Dr. Gad Saad about his newly published book, “The Saad Truth about Happiness: 8 Secrets for Leading the Good Life.” From the archives, I look back on a conversation about neurology, humans, animals, personal growth — and the link among those topics.

Advice

You Have Value

People do not like it when you treat them like they are not conscious. They react very badly to that. And you do not like it if someone assumes you are not conscious or that you do not have free will, that you are just absolutely determined in your actions and there is nothing that is going to repair you — and you do not need to have any responsibility for your actions.

The laws of our culture are predicated on the idea: People are conscious, people have experience, people make decisions and can be held responsible for them if there is a free will element to it.

You can debate all that philosophically, and fine. But the point is, that is how we act and that is the ideal that our legal system is predicated on. And there is something deep about it because you are subject to the law. But the law is also limited by you, which is to say that in a well-functioning, properly-grounded democratic system, you have intrinsic value.

The Call To Abraham

Let’s read the stories. The first one is about Abraham, Sarah, and Lot. “Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah begat Abram.” His name is Abram to begin with, and that actually turns out to be important. It’s not Abraham. “Nahor and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.” So Haran is Abram’s brother. “And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees. And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah. But Sarai was barren; she had no child. And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai her daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from the Ur of Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan;” — that’s exile — “and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. And the days of Terah were 205 years: and Terah died in Haran.”

The Intersection of Evolutionary Biology, Religion and Happiness | Dr. Gad Saad | EP 377

Dr. Gad Saad and I discuss his newly published book, “The Saad Truth about Happiness: 8 Secrets for Leading the Good Life.” We also discuss the parasitic ability that ideas can have on the human mind, the predictors for left-wing authoritarianism, the evolutionary argument for why humans are spiritual beings, the biblically rooted idea that divinity exists and manifests within rather than from without, the connections between religiosity and true happiness, and how the spirit of play is integral to living a meaningful life.
