The heat is rising -- both metaphorically and literally.
Last week, Climate Central released a report naming New York as the city with the most significant heat island effect. Their report evaluated 19,000 factors across 44 cities to determine each area’s urban heat index. New York topped the charts due to the concentrations of steel skyscrapers and the 6,000 miles of asphalt that combined increased the city’s heat by 8°F. Additionally, because of the disproportionate landscape across the city, this temperature can be up to 10°F hotter for 40% of the 7 million people living in NYC.
Our city’s temperature peaked at over 100°F for four days straight last week, and I don’t think this news surprises anyone.
And while NYC was scorching hot, I spent the last week of our summer session working to turn down the heat in Congress.
Temperatures rose from my colleagues across the aisle as House Republicans continued to ignore important legislation that would bring relief to millions of Americans and instead decided to waste the week with in-party fighting and pushing forward illegitimate impeachment attempts.
While Republicans maintain the majority in Congress, we will continue to fight against the defunding of our environment, the roll-back of climate protections, and the blatant ignorance fueling the GOP’s disbelief in humans’ impact on climate change.
