July 31st, 2023: Weekly Newsletter | Stop the Mayhem — Secure Our Border | Watch my remarks on securing the border. | Last week, I joined Texas Republicans in a press conference to pressure Congressional leadership and the Biden Administration for more action on border security. Given the recent events with Biden’s Department of Justice threatening to sue Texas over security efforts, this is a critical issue that cannot wait. As we know, since he took office in 2021, the Biden Administration — in particular, Secretary Mayorkas — have actively worked to undermine our country with open borders policy. What’s worse, their policies have handed operational control over our border border to violent cartels who traffic drugs, commit violent crimes, and murder innocent people. This is a dereliction of duty on the part of Joe Biden. Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution clearly states that the federal government should protect states from invasion. Instead of carrying out its constitutional duty to secure our border, the Biden Administration has left states like Texas to fend for themselves and chooses to sue these states when they try to take matters into their own hands. Texans are tired of this Administration’s failed policies and gaslighting. Watch our press conference where we address what we’re doing on it. | Meeting with Christians Engaged in DC | One of the great privileges of being in Congress is the chance to speak to people of faith from all over the country. A wonderful group called "Christians Engaged," led by my friend Bunni Pounds came to DC a few weeks ago for a visit. They are a key ministry organization that works to empower Americans to engage the Christian community in public life while encouraging fellow Christian members of Congress to stay true to the Lord while serving. Their visit has been a real blessing. I had the opportunity to speak to the group about the importance of people of faith engaging in the political process, as well as pray with them for God’s guidance as wisdom over our country’s leaders. Thank you to Bunni and the great folks who made this trip happen. They have been a tremendous encouragement! | Standing With Our Ally Israel | On July 19th, Congress welcomed Israeli President Isaac Herzog to speak to a Joint Meeting of Congress to celebrate the strong relationship between our two nations. It was an honor to attend. As I’ve long said, our alliance with Israel is critical, and despite political differences, it is essential that elected leaders speak clearly and decisively about our support for the Israeli people. Unfortunately, in light of some blatantly anti-semitic comments from my Democrat colleagues in Washington, the House was forced to pass a resolution condemning anti-semnitism and signaling support for the Jewish community. I was proud vote in favor of this resolution because anti-semitism has absolutely no place in America. For 75 years, Israel has stood as a beacon of freedom in the Middle East. While American leaders should always put America first, part of that duty is to support alliances like ours with the Israeli people. I look forward to continuing that mission in Congress. | I voted in favor of H.R. 3941, the Schools Not Shelters Act, which prohibits the use of public elementary, secondary schools, and institutions of higher education to provide shelter for illegal immigrants. The House voted on this bill in light of recent reports from New York City that Mayor Eric Adams was ordering that school facilities be used to house aliens. As we witness the aftermath of the pandemic-era learning loss among children, it is imperative that local officials prioritize the education of their students–not allocate school resources to illegal migrants. President Biden’s reckless open-border policies are the reason why we have illegal immigrants flooding the country with nowhere to go. Schools should not have to pay the price for Joe Biden’s failure to secure our borders. Schools are places for our kids to learn, grow, and succeed–not shelter to cover for Biden’s terrible leadership. | I was honored to accept an “Award for Conservative Achievement” for the 2021-22 Congressional Session from CPAC. | Rep.
