An update on our work protecting voting rights and fair, diverse democracy. Dear friend, Did you see our last email sharing the SPLC’s 2023 Action Plan memo at SPLC President and CEO Margaret Huang’s request? Our supporters deserve details about the important progress you make possible. Below is an update on our work protecting voting rights and fair, diverse democracy. Please review the memo and consider making a special gift to advance our 2023 Action Plan. Safeguarding the Voice of the People Throughout the remainder of 2023, we’re advancing our current docket of voting rights cases and investigating local redistricting plans that adversely affect the fair representation of Black voters and other voters of color. Some of our existing lawsuits challenge anti-voter laws passed by state legislatures immediately after the 2020 election, including rules that reduce access to drop boxes and early voting and impose restrictions on absentee or mail-in voting. Building an inclusive, multiracial democracy also means increasing voter turnout. To that end, through our Vote Your Voice initiative, we are partnering with dozens of organizations to help sustain their crucial work during and between major election cycles and support their long-term strategic planning for years to come. We will not allow our country to retreat from its ideals or reverse the progress we’ve made through so much sacrifice. Please make a special gift today to protect the sacred right to vote and defend our hard-won civil rights. Dismantling Exploitative Government Practices Communities of color cannot build generational wealth when governmental entities and predatory businesses enact policies and practices that systematically disadvantage Black, Brown and Indigenous families. We are fighting coercive court debt in Alabama and the Carolinas, challenging court fees and fines in Louisiana and Alabama, suing to stop for-profit private probation in Alabama, reforming bail systems in Tennessee and Alabama, stopping policing for profit in Mississippi and Alabama and more. Sincerely, Your friends at the Southern Poverty Law Center |
