I am writing this email with a mixture of anger, disbelief, and absolute outrage.

When I first heard the news that the Florida State Board of education is teaching that “slavery is beneficial” because it “taught useful skills” – I almost didn’t believe it.

I spend my days in Congress doing everything I can to re-instill the trust and respect our institutions once commanded, but it’s more lies and bigotry like this that tarnish what America stands for, and the long and painful history that brought us these principles of justice and fairness.

Extremists have brought their culture war not just in the halls of our Congress, they’re in our schools, our doctor’s offices, and our homes.

I won’t hesitate to call out untruths and racism where I see it, and I am ready to mobilize with concerned teachers, parents, and community members to stand up against this egregious falsehood.
