The claim that capitalist culture and Christianity are compatible . . . seems to me not only self-evidently false, but quaintly (and perhaps perilously) deluded.
The market can be made fair—to give it moral legitimacy it must be made fair—but what it cannot be made to do, at least not without wrecking it, is to discriminate in favor of failure.
