[ [link removed] ]People For’s “Grandparents For Truth” Confronts Book Banning Group
Head-On
On a bright sunny morning in Philadelphia, People For members and
supporters took to the streets to rally against an organization advocating
for book banning in schools and libraries across the nation. The group,
Moms For Liberty – a far-right organization funded by Republican
megadonors – has made it their mission to stoke fears and resentment
against Black, indigenous, people of color, and LGBTQ communities.
This event, which launched People For’s new Grandparents for Truth
initiative, was a rallying call to defend the freedom to learn and fight
back against authoritarianism and censorship. We heard from grandparents
concerned about their grandchildren’s freedom to learn our nation’s true
history; transgender veterans who understand that the oath they took to
protect our country includes defending freedom and fighting censorship;
and elected officials who made it clear that hate has no place in
Philadelphia.
Building upon PFAW’s long history of standing up to book bans and
censorship, we made it clear to Moms For Liberty, and the nation, that we
won’t back down from these attacks on the freedom to learn.

Strategy
A parade of MAGA-minded presidential candidates drew cheers at the recent
Moms for Liberty national summit with conspiracy theories, anti-LGBTQ
smears, and calls for authoritarian policies to purge “wokeness” from
American schools, businesses, and government agencies. The summit and
its speakers revealed much about the vastly expanded mission to which M4L
activists are being called: to be a political vanguard that will drive
Democrats from power and save America from the supposed threats to its
survival from communists, globalists, secularists, the “deep state,”
teachers unions, promoters of “gender ideology,” and the rest of the MAGA
movement’s perceived enemies.

New Reports Contrast Bad News on Supreme Court with Good News from Lower
Courts
By now most Americans are well aware of the disastrous consequences that
the far-right Supreme Court has had on our rights – and the threats it
continues to pose. The Court’s most recent term illustrates this troubling
trend – upending rights and protections once thought to be safe: granting
some businesses a license to discriminate against the LGBTQ community,
ending the practice of affirmative action, undermining President Biden’s
student loan forgiveness plan, and more.
But despite these devastating rulings, there is reason to be optimistic:
President Biden and Senate Democrats have been filling vacancies on lower
federal courts – even if at a slowing pace – that could provide a xxxxxx
against further erosion of our rights.
