Medicare has overcome so much in its 58 years. Private medical corporations organized a massive campaign to prevent its passage, including pressing a vinyl record¹ of a Ronald Reagan speech warning that if Medicare was implemented, “you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children, and our children’s children, what it once was like in America when men were free.”

Ronald Reagan was wrong. Today, Medicare and Social Security are the most popular and successful programs that our government has created. But those same private corporations are still trying to dismantle it, even 58 years after it was enacted.

Tomorrow is the 58th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid―and they’re under assault like never before.

Some of the richest corporations in America―health insurers and pharmaceutical giants―are waging war against Medicare, trying to privatize Medicare completely and force it to accept pharma price gouging. They’re trying to take the one part of our health care system that works―traditional Medicare―and make it match the bureaucratic nightmare of denials and delays that are the hallmarks of our profit-driven insurance system.

Medicare, along with Social Security, is the most successful domestic program in the history of our country. It is the most efficient, secure, universal, and fair way for Americans to have guaranteed health care in retirement or when disabled. Before Medicare, very few seniors had any health insurance at all, and the health insurance that those few had was generally inadequate and extremely expensive.

Medicare spends just a penny of every dollar on administrative costs. The rest is paid in benefits. Private health insurance can’t say the same―the Affordable Care Act limits insurance companies to using no more than 20% of patient premiums for administrative costs―and insurers were outraged by that new limit.

Seniors spend more than one-third of every Social Security check on medical expenses. We need to protect Medicare, not privatize it!
