Originally published on dailyherald.com 07/26/23 As a former history teacher, lessons from history inevitably inform my administration's public policy. Those lessons are on full display today and all month long, as we commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In that spirit, I invite residents to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this pivotal civil rights legislation and the ways in which Cook County carries on its legacy today.Enacted in 1990, the ADA stands as a cornerstone against discrimination, ensuring equal access and opportunities for people with disabilities in vital areas like employment, transportation, public accommodations and state and local government programs. As we emerge from a pandemic, it's essential that we collectively reaffirm our commitment to breaking barriers and empowering all residents to achieve their full potential.
