Hello, John.
I'm Jennifer Siebel Newsom: advocate, documentary filmmaker, and First Partner of California.
But today, I am writing to you as a mother of four.
Because two of the accomplishments I am most proud of since Gavin was elected governor are California's Universal School Meals and Farm to School initiative.
You may not know this, but California was the first state to provide free breakfast and lunch to all 6 million public school students- the largest population of students to receive free meals, regardless of income status.
We took action because children cannot learn if they are hungry. And their bodies and brains require the freshest, most nutritious, and delicious food possible.
We took action because children get the bulk of their daily nutrients from school meals and this is an equity issue for low-income communities and communities of color.
We took action because given California's unparalleled agricultural production, our state is uniquely positioned to scale up Farm to School to create a healthier, more equitable- not to mention sustainable- future for ALL our children.
Because these aren't the school meals many of us grew up with...
Through our Farm to School program, we are connecting small and medium scale farmers directly with school districts, we're increasing students' access to nutritious and delicious foods, we’re growing local jobs and economies, and we’re mitigating climate change.
To date, we know the Farm to School grant program has reached at least 1.5 million students. But the reach is even broader.
I recently spoke at a conference about the work we're doing in California for our children. I hope you'll take a look at this clip:
I appreciate you reading, and look forward to talking again soon. In the meantime, you can say hello on Twitter @JenSiebelNewsom.

If you believe Democrats need to go on offense, even in Red States, we're asking you to donate $20 to Gavin Newsom’s Campaign for Democracy PAC to help him get it done.
Because the truth is, in red states, just like blue states, parents worry about their kids’ education.
In red states, just like blue states, people worry about health care access and the cost of prescription drugs.
In red states, just like blue states, people worry about gun violence in their communities.
