 CHAMPION MESSAGE

Democrats are attempting to carry a "populist message. The message is meant to inspire cynicism. It's meant to make Americans think the cards are stacked against them."

Education Secretary's Budget Proposal Is a Step in the Right Direction

Secretary Betsy DeVos submitted a budget for the Department of Education that would slash its budget and reduce its power. The DeVos budget would mean that the Department of Education would stand down for oversight of around $20 billion that is directed at K-12 programs, such as 21st Center Community Centers and Indian Education. Under DeVos’ plan the money would be block granted to the states. In other words, education would return to local control where it was for generations.

VA Senate Stiffens Licensing Requirements for Art Therapists

While Tennessee is moving to eliminate superfluous professional licensing that keeps people out of work. The newly Democrat-led Virginia is going in the opposite direction. The Virginia Senate has voted unanimously for erecting new barriers for would-be art therapists. While the new bill would make it harder to become an art therapist, it does create a new job—for a bureaucrat.

HOW TO
TALK ABOUT

Minimum Wage

Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have proposed increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. Rep. Rashida Tlaib wants it to be $20 an hour. It's time for a reality check:
  • The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that a $15 minimum wage would leave 1.3 million workers out of work.
  • The CBO also concludes that family income would be reduced by $9 billion by 2025—a burden that American families do not need.
  • Minimum wage jobs are a starting point for workers. Over half of minimum wage workers are young people between the ages of 16 and 24, and nearly two out of three of them are working part-time. They gain skills and experience that they can level to move up into better-paying positions.
  • Two-thirds of minimum wage workers earn a raise within their first 12 months on the job.
  • The more lawmakers push for increasing minimum wages to $15 and beyond, the more harm they will inflict on low-wage workers who want opportunity.

We Need a “National Crime Survivor Week”

Moms Demand Action is showing one side of a story to push a dishonest agenda. The group wants people to believe that gun rights are a problem even though guns help save lives every day. The Second Amendment empowers good citizens to live their lives freely—this is especially true for women, as a gun in the hands of a law-abiding citizen is an equalizer.

New York Times Undermines the Administration on Coronavirus Measures

The New York Times published one of its all-time silliest stories the other day, but it was on a deadly serious subject: the coronavirus. The headline said it all: "Some Experts Worry as a Germ-Phobic Trump Confronts a Growing Epidemic." We don’t regard hating germs as an impediment to fighting a deadly virus. If anything, it might be an advantage. The purpose of the story is to undermine the president’s credibility at a time when he takes measures to protect the nation from an epidemic.

Women’s Salaries Gaining Faster Than Men’s

The salaries of women are rising faster than those of men. According to a report in Market Watch on a Pew Research survey, one reason is that women are moving into jobs in more lucrative fields. We’re glad to see some acknowledgment that the wage gap is shrinking. But it is actually much better than that...
