With the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries now behind us and new primary dates on the horizon, you might have noticed the different ways every state runs their elections and the different types of equipment being used across the country. Have you taken a look at Verified Voting’s Verifier tool recently? We’ve made some improvements, and we think you’re going to like what you see.
Perhaps we should start with the basics: did you know that Verified Voting maintains the most comprehensive public data set on voting equipment usage in the U.S. through 2020?
For every even-numbered election year beginning with 2006 we can tell you what kind of voting machines have been used in your jurisdiction, or any jurisdiction across the country. The Verifier is a trusted resource for everyone – from government officials, to independent researchers, to journalists – and has informed election protection efforts, election security legislation, and everything in between. Check out www.verifiedvoting.org/verifier.
The updated Verifier now shows the country’s voting equipment by county on the main map. It also distinguishes between jurisdictions that primarily use hand-marked paper ballot voting systems and those that primarily use ballot marking devices (BMDs) to produce a paper ballot. We’re working on filling in more of the historical displays so you can see the significant progress we’ve made toward paper records over the years, but the data is still very much available for download.
And with your help, there’s even more to come. We’ve made a number of improvements that will allow us to integrate the other election-related data sets we track. When the revamped Verified Voting website debuts in just a few months, you’ll be able to see more of those comparisons in action. You’ll also have explanations of the voting systems right at your fingertips, and be able to learn more about the election security issues facing your state.
