Good news from the United Nations: We’re happy to announce that the U.N. is awarding its highest human rights award to the Global Coalition of Civil Society, Indigenous Peoples, Social Movements, and Local Communities for the Universal Recognition of the Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment. This coalition includes AFSC, Quaker United Nations Office, Friends World Committee for Consultation, and Quaker Earthcare Witness, among many others. The award is a recognition of tireless efforts that began decades ago and resulted in thousands of people from all across the globe joining forces to achieve a milestone: the recognition by the United Nations of the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.
Tell Congress: NO cuts to community needs in budget negotiations: Right now, Congress is debating budget proposals for 2024. Some want to cut affordable housing, nutrition programs, health care, and efforts to address climate change. Tell Congress to protect these vital programs—and to stop funding war, abusive immigration enforcement, and corporate tax breaks!
Oakland teens from immigrant families are using art to tell their stories: Through AFSC’s 67 Sueños program, undocumented and other youth are making their voices heard on immigration policy. By creating public murals, they're expressing their own ideas for a more just, peaceful future for their community. (The Oaklandside).
Tracking military recruiter abuse: In April 2022, AFSC reopened its Military Recruiter Abuse Hotline. Over the course of a year, we collected stories from people who had experienced a wide range of misconduct and abuse from military recruiters. Read what we found out—and our recommendations to stop this abuse.
Thank you to everyone who has donated to help stop Cop City!: With your support, we were able to bring in $10,000 in matching funds—but we still need your help. If constructed, the proposed facility in Atlanta would be one of the largest militarized police training centers in the U.S., built by destroying a vital urban forest. If you haven’t yet donated, your gift can still help fund our coalition referendum campaign and more.
