69% of orca pregnancies end in miscarriage, Friend. And with the endangered Southern Resident orca population at its lowest since the 1970’s, it’s critical that we restore this dwindling species before we lose these iconic whales forever.
That’s why it’s such wonderful news that TWO baby orcas have just been confirmed! Born into the very same pod as the beloved matriarch Marina who died just a few short years ago, these new whale calves could play an important role in recovering this dying species.
But we don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves, Friend. Sadly, the mortality rate for newborns is as high as 50%, so these baby orcas won’t even be counted and named until they can survive at least a year after birth.
If these two newborn orcas are going to have a chance at survival, it’s imperative that they have enough food to keep them nourished and growing strong. But corporate overfishing and bycatch has been DECIMATING Chinook salmon populations, leaving many orcas starving and malnourished. These two newborn orcas are counting on us to be their voice so that they can grow up to live healthy and happy lives. With the losses of Marina, Cappuccino, and Ripple over the last couple of years alone, Southern Resident killer whales have been clinging to survival and suffering from stress, grief, miscarriage, and starvation. When even just one member of their tight-knit pod dies, these sensitive animals can feel the heavy sadness of losing a family member.
The births of the two new orcas is a hopeful sign of recovery for these treasured mammals, but the odds are still stacked against them.
Threats like global warming, ocean acidification, and increased water pollution have all been largely driven by humans — so if we’re going to SAVE the last of these precious marine animals, the least that we can do now is take the necessary steps to mitigate further dangers and help replenish their food supply before they go EXTINCT.
