Dear Friends,
As July comes to a close, my office has had much to celebrate over the last few days. We passed a vital reform to the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, I worked with President Biden to honor the memory of Emmett Till and his mother Mamie Till-Mobley, and introduced legislation to recognize gun violence as a public health emergency.
Securing the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network
6,000 Americans die each year while waiting for an organ transplant. These preventable deaths are unacceptable. The House passed my bipartisan Securing the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Act on Tuesday, which I led with Rep. Larry Bucshon (IN-08). This legislation will allow the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to run a competitive process to choose from the best contractors to modernize the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) to protect and expedite organ transplantation.
The Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument proclamation
I was proud to stand with President Biden as he signed a proclamation establishing the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument, which will preserve Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, in Chicago’s Bronzeville community. In 1955, thousands gathered here for Till’s funeral, bringing national attention to the reality of violent racism. Last month, I visited this historic site, and introduced legislation with several of my colleagues to protect it. The story of Emmett Till, and his mother Mamie Till-Mobley, must never be forgotten; Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ is an integral part of that story.
Recognizing Gun Violence as a Public Health Emergency Act
In 2022, 44,357 Americans died of gun violence, and nearly 40,000 more were injured. Gun violence must be treated as a public health issue because we cannot deploy interventions without understanding the root causes. This is why I introduced the Recognizing Gun Violence as a Public Health Emergency Act, which directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to coordinate with the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to produce an annual report on gun violence, its public health effects, and action that should be taken by the federal government. Congress must empower our leading public health officials to study our nation’s gun violence epidemic as a public health emergency.
I hope to see you over the next five weeks as I travel across Illinois' Second Congressional District as a part of the annual August district work period. Stay tuned for some exciting upcoming events.
