Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

It's a great week in the Sports Capital.

Last week marked a new chapter for the Washington Commanders with the approved sale of the team to Josh Harris and the Washington Commanders Ownership Group. On the heels of hosting a sold-out 2023 MLS All-Star Game at Audi Field, we are cheering on the U.S. Women’s National Team, which includes four players from the Washington Spirit, in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This weekend, we are kicking off the Mubadala Citi DC Open. And throughout the summer, fans have continued cheering on the Mystics at the ESA, DC United and the Spirit at Audi Field, and the Nationals at Nats Park.

*Of course, being the Sports Capital is about more than sports—it's about creating opportunities, jobs, and revenue for DC residents.* It's about exposing our children to the benefits of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. To that end, yesterday, we announced a new Sports Team in the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development [ [link removed] ] (DMPED). The goal of the new DMPED Sports Team is to maintain, attract, and grow world-class sports teams and sporting events in Washington, DC and to help develop the next generation of DC athletes and coaches.

This week, we are also celebrating a new opportunity to unlock the full potential of the RFK campus. From the moment I became Mayor, I made it a point for the District to get control of RFK and to control our destiny on the campus. The RFK campus is 190 acres of potential. Events DC has already started the demolition of the stadium that brought us so many good memories. The Council has approved my $60 million investment in a new recreation and sports complex on the campus, which will create more opportunities for young athletes to train and compete in DC. And we know what an extended 99-year lease and the ability to redevelop the campus for a mix of uses could mean for our city—sport, recreation, housing, restaurants, and more. And all of that means one thing: jobs for DC residents.

We've had a lot to celebrate in the District of Champions these past few years. Let's keep winning for DC.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Stay Safe During Extreme Heat

extreme heat

This week, as temperatures have soared dangerously high, Mayor Bowser activated [ [link removed] ] a Hot Weather Emergency for Wednesday, July 26 through Sunday, July 30. During a Hot Weather Emergency, the District stands up cooling centers for residents seeking relief from the heat.

Help protect yourself and others from extreme hot weather by following these safety precautions:

* *Stay indoors when possible*: find places in the shade or with air conditioning to seek relief from the heat.
* *Check in on your neighbors*: young children, the elderly, residents living outside, and those with access and functional needs are the most vulnerable in our community.
* *Drink plenty of fluids*: increase your fluid intake but don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol, caffeine, or large amounts of sugar.
* *Keep pets indoors*: walk pets early in the morning, give pets plenty of water and do not leave pets in vehicles, which can reach dangerous temperatures quickly. For all animal emergencies, including animals left outside in extreme temperatures or in vehicles, please call the Humane Rescue Alliance at (202) 723-5730.
* *Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen*: pick lightweight, loose fitting, light-colored clothing, and wide brimmed hats.

*Cooling Centers: *Residents can request free transportation to a cooling center for themselves or someone else by calling the shelter hotline at (202) 399-7093 or by calling 311. Residents can find their closest cooling center using this interactive map [ [link removed] ].

Cooling buses are also deployed throughout the District.
