LGBTQ+ Stories You Should Know About
Meet Our New Candidates!
Yesterday, Victory Fund announced [[link removed]] our latest endorsements, including Joe Vogel, who is running for the U.S. Congress. If elected, Joe will be the first out LGBTQ+ person ever elected to Congress from Maryland [[link removed]] – and the second Gen Z person elected to Congress from any state! “As anti-LGBTQ and anti-choice legislation moves through legislative bodies across the country, including Congress, we must elect leaders like Joe who will go to bat for our rights. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment.” [[link removed]]
Victory Fund has now endorsed 171 candidates running in the 2023 cycle and 24 candidates running in the 2024 cycle. Meet all our newly endorsed candidates here! [[link removed]]
Fabian Nelson: “The People’s Candidate”
Earlier this week, Victory Fund helped place a profile for Spotlight candidate Fabian Nelson in LGBTQ Nation .
[[link removed]] In it, Fabian opens up about fatherhood, why he is running for the state House and what he hopes to accomplish in office. “I’m the people’s candidate. I tell people all the time, ‘We have to stop looking at our politicians to save our communities. It’s up to us to save our communities.’” [[link removed]]
ICYMI: If elected, Fabian would be the first out LGBTQ+ person ever elected to the Mississippi legislature.
[[link removed]] Mississippi currently has zero out LGBTQ+ elected officials [[link removed]] at any level.
Why CA-41 is a “Ticking Time Bomb”
Last week, incumbent U.S. Congressman Ken Calvert voted to kill $3.6 million in funding for three LGBTQ+ projects. Calvert is running against Victory Fund candidate Will Rollins to represent Palm Springs. After Calvert’s vote, Will joined Julie Mason on Sirius XM to talk about the vote, the state of the race and why he is the best candidate. [[link removed]] When the Washington Blade asked Calvert to justify his vote, he declined to comment. “Calvert did not answer questions about why he deserves the support of LGBTQ voters.” [[link removed]]
Catch up quick: last week, Cook Political Report changed the rating from “Lean Republican” to “Toss Up”!
Nick Hellyar Leads the Pack
Spotlight candidate Nick Hellyar , running for the Houston City Council, just announced he has surpassed $200,000 in fundraising [[link removed]] , more than any of his opponents! Houston city government is at risk of losing LGBTQ+ representation for the first time since 1998 [[link removed]] when Victory Fund’s very own President & CEO Mayor Annise Parker was elected to the City Council. The good news is that Victory Fund has endorsed both Nick and Mario Castillo , both of whom are running exceptional races.
