Last week to GOTV for “the Justins:” Let’s pile it on.

On August 3rd, the saga of the Justins, and the callous injustice of their expulsion from the Tennessee State House, comes to an end. But wouldn’t it be great if that saga ended with an over-the-top victory?

After all, is it enough that Rep. Justin Jones (District 52 - part of Davidson County/Nashville) and Rep. Justin J. Pearson (District 86 - part of Shelby County/Memphis) are returned to their seats?

Absolutely not!

The Justins should never have had to endure a reappointment process, a Special Primary, and a Special General Election to retain the seats their constituents had elected them to fill–all because they advocated against the gun violence that plagues their communities, just as their constituents had urged them to do. By the same token, their constituents never should have gone without representation while they were expelled, nor been forced to pay for unnecessary appointment procedures and elections.

But at the hands of a vindictive MAGA Legislature, that’s exactly what happened–and now it’s payback time. So let’s pile it on!

Friends, we cannot allow MAGA-supermajorities to bully and silence elected officials who simply represent the interests of their constituents. That is undemocratic and unAmerican. The best way to respond to bullies is to stand up to them; in this case that means turning a huge majority for the Justins.

While this special election is “local,” there is nothing local about the issues involved. The entire nation followed the trauma of the Nashville school shooting that killed three children and three adults–AND the pathetic aftermath in the Tennessee Legislature. The outrage at the lack of respect for the young Black Legislators and their constituents is not limited to Nashville or Tennessee.
