In Texas - Last week, the Center for Reproductive Rights met the State of
Texas in court for the case Zurawski v. State of Texas, highlighting the
dangerous precedent of women being denied healthcare due to restrictive
abortion laws. In the gut-wrenching testimony, one woman described her
experience in which she was told to wait to be "sick enough" to qualify
for an abortion under the Texas law. Another detailed the devastating
knowledge that she would have to carry a non-viable pregnancy to term,
with the death of her newborn inevitable. Under the current law, there are
no exceptions for rape or incest, and narrow carveouts exist for the life
of the mother; as we have seen with this testimony and anecdotal evidence
from across the country, those exceptions are rarely implemented. Â
In Ohio -Â A special election on August 8th could determine the state's
ability to require more than a simple majority for a ballot measure on
abortion. Issue 1 is on the ballot requiring 60% voter approval for ballot
measures to be adopted. This, in turn, if it passes, would require any
effort on abortion access to surpass the 60% threshold, as well as any
other measure. This is yet another way for Republicans in the state to
target reproductive healthcare and silence voters in changing the laws to
benefit their goals.Â
In Georgia -Â An anti-abortion group, composed mostly of men, floated the
idea to not only outlaw abortion but make it punishable by death.
According to the Georgia Recorder, "Operation Save America, an
anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ, and anti-Muslim religious group that wants all
Americans to follow “God’s law." In a meeting, the group focused on "equal
protection” bills"...an “equal protection” bill, by their definition, is
one that adds criminal penalties to a pregnant person for the intentional
termination of a pregnancy at any stage, with no exceptions for rape or
incest."Â
