In case you missed it, on Thursday we had a great Patients Over Profits strategy call with supporters from across the country to discuss the next phase of our campaign.
Already know you want to get more involved? Sign up for a Special Volunteer Team now!
For more background, here are the call highlights and next steps to further build our movement:
Our own Zenei Triunfo-Cortez, RN, President of National Nurses United and the California Nurses Association, kicked off the call by explaining that nurses know our health care system needs transformational change. But with so many elected officials in the pockets of for-profit health care corporations, the current conditions are not favorable to winning Medicare For All — which is exactly why we have to change the conditions!
Our Patients Over Profits campaign does just that by demanding politicians take the pledge to reject donations of $200 or more from executives, lobbyists, and PACs affiliated with the for-profit health care industry, including private insurers, Big Pharma, and private hospitals. We have collected the signatures of more than 100 elected officials and candidates so far thanks to amazing volunteers like Ken Kenegos, RN, who spoke on the call about how he’s been busy organizing at in-person events with the Arizona Medicare for All Coalition.
One of those signers is State Representative Anna V. Eskamani from Florida’s 42nd district. Rep. Eskamani joined our call to explain why she took the pledge. She knows that in order to build the political will to pass Medicare For All nationwide, we need to cut off the financial influence of for-profit health care corporations on politicians.
As we move into our next phase and build our list of pledge signers, here’s how you can help (we’ll provide guidance and everything you need to know):
We’re also hosting monthly Patients Over Profits update calls to talk about how things are going, trade tips and tricks, and have time for questions. Look out for an email with information to join the first one on August 28!
The success of our Patients Over Profits campaign, and the Medicare For All movement at-large, depends on the help of volunteers like you.
Thank you for taking action and making this work possible,
