Dear Friend,
Since January 20, 2021, the Biden administration has systematically erased our southern border, enriched violent cartels and human traffickers, unleashed a tidal wave of illegal aliens and deadly drugs into our communities, and disrespected the millions of legal immigrants who followed our laws and came here the right way.
All you have to do is talk to your local sheriff, and they will tell you they have seen the number of fentanyl deaths rise exponentially in the past two years.
No one is immune from this crisis as the Biden administration’s open border policies have turned every state into a border state.
That’s why this week when the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, I was hoping to get him to come clean with the American people.
I played a clip of an Arizona sheriff, Mark Dannels, who has over 80 miles of the southern border in his county, telling me that he has seen the direct results of the fentanyl increase and the wide-open southern border. I asked Secretary Mayorkas directly if he agreed with his statement.
In almost unbelievable fashion, he claimed Sheriff Dannels was lying. You can watch that clip here.
Now, I can tell you I trust Sheriff Dannels over someone who lives in Washington, D.C., and the facts back that up. According to The Washington Post, U.S. authorities estimate they are only catching 5 to 10 percent of the illegal fentanyl flooding across the southern border.
So why is the Biden administration complicit in letting these poisonings continue?
I also asked Secretary Mayorkas if he knew how many unvetted Afghans he paroled into our country during the botched Afghanistan withdrawal. He couldn’t answer the question. I followed up by asking him if he knew the amount of damage at Ft. McCoy that was caused by the Afghan evacuees – which totaled $145.6 million. He also refused to answer that.
These are basic questions that the person in charge of keeping our homeland safe should be able to answer.
Instead, he seems more interested in protecting cartels record-breaking profits, encouraging illegal immigration, and allowing drug and human trafficking to continue. I joined Steve Bannon to discuss that here.
Here’s the bottom line: If Mr. Mayorkas is going to continue to lie to the American people, the only other option we have left is to begin an impeachment inquiry.
House Republicans already did our job and passed the Secure the Border Act to get operational control of our southern border and provide our hardworking Border Patrol agents with a much-needed bonus.
Sadly, it continues to await action in the Senate, where majority Democrats are holding it up.
Thanks again for starting your weekend off with the Tiffany Telegram. We will be back in two weeks with more.
Sincerely,
Tom Tiffany Member of Congress
Going to bat for forest health
This week, one of the bills we passed on the House floor was S.J.Res.24 which nullifies a misguided final rule issued by President Biden’s Fish and Wildlife Service that lists the Northern Long-Eared Bat under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This bill cleared both chambers of Congress with bipartisan support and now awaits President Biden’s signature. Telegram readers know I’ve mentioned this issue before, and why it’s so important. Keeping this species off the ESA list is critically important. That’s because the bat has a range spanning 37 states and 300 million acres of private forest land. Listing it under the ESA triggers a menu of new restrictions and red tape that is guaranteed to hamper economic activity throughout broad sections of the United States – inflicting serious harm on the forest products industry, which is so important to our district and region. I was happy to cast my vote in favor of this bill, and I hope the President will sign it into law.
When opportunity knocks…
I think we can all agree that selling another human into sex slavery is wrong and immoral no matter what side of the aisle you’re on, which is why it’s shocking how controversial this summer’s box office hit the “Sound of Freedom” has become. The film itself has nothing to do with politics and is based on the real-life experiences of a federal agent who risked his own life to rescue children from an overseas sex ring. So maybe the real problem is that by shining a light on sex trafficking it also inadvertently exposed how policies enacted by the Biden administration enable human trafficking operations – like those depicted in the film – to expand their operations. President Biden’s open borders policies opened a 1,954-mile door along our southern border allowing cartels and human traffickers to come and go as they please while blending in with the tidal wave of illegal aliens rushing through. Just like the cartels, human traffickers have always had the means and motive – sadly, now they also have the opportunity. Unfortunately, there are more people in slavery today than at any other point in history. That should be reason enough for lawmakers to get serious about securing our borders and finally put an end to the U.S. government’s involvement in what has arguably become the largest human trafficking operation in the world. That’s why the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2 the Secure the Border Act – because putting an end to human trafficking starts with closing our door to human traffickers, cartels, and criminals. Will Kamala meet with Taiwan’s Veep?
It’s no secret that the Biden administration’s approach to China has been a complete disaster. From the widespread use of slave labor and outright genocide, to forced organ harvesting, spy balloons, and secret Communist Party “police stations” on American soil, it has never been clearer that our approach to China needs to change. A good place to start is with Taiwan, a longtime democratic ally and trade partner – one that the White House sadly refuses to even recognize as a country. And it isn’t just the Biden administration. For too long, American leaders of both political parties have buckled under Chinese pressure and snubbed our friends in Taiwan. It’s a dumb strategy – and one that has only made things worse. After all, it doesn’t take a genius to realize that when you reward bullying and bad behavior, you get more bullying and bad behavior. The good news is that the Biden administration has an opportunity to break this destructive cycle next month when Taiwan’s Vice President William Lai makes a landmark visit to the United States. That’s why I called on Vice President Kamala Harris to ignore China’s childish temper tantrums and meet directly with Vice President Lai during his stopover. You can read the letter I sent Vice President Harris here.
Thank you, interns
Yesterday was National Intern Day, and I want to give a special thank you to my office’s summer interns – Liz, Kylee, Chris, and Abby. Your hard work for the Seventh District has been a huge help, and there’s no doubt you all have bright futures ahead. If you would like to work in a congressional office and learn about the legislative process, my Wausau and Washington D.C. offices are accepting fall intern applications. You can find more details on how to apply here.
Congratulations to Liz, Kylee, and Chris for completing their summer internship today.
Committee Update
Judiciary
Facebook files: Part 1
When Elon Musk purchased Twitter, he released a series of “Twitter Files” to the American people that showed the federal government worked with Twitter executives to censor differing viewpoints on COVID. The federal government should not be in the business of policing free speech, and if they are, the American people have a right to know. That’s why when House Republicans gained the majority, Chairman Jim Jordan subpoenaed Big Tech CEOs for communications relating to the Biden administration’s collusion with social media platforms. Not surprisingly, some of the CEOs, including Mark Zuckerberg, failed to supply those documents. Nevertheless, this week, as House Judiciary Republicans were getting ready to hold Mr. Zuckerberg in contempt of Congress, the Facebook and Instagram CEO had a "newfound commitment to fully cooperate with the Committee’s investigation." Now, it’s not surprising why Facebook tried to cover up their content moderation at the pressurized requests of several Biden administration officials after Chairman Jordan released never-before-seen documents yesterday. Penned as the “The Facebook Files, Part 1," these documents show that Facebook faced unconstitutional pressure from the Biden administration to remove and moderate posts – going as far as requesting that even memes (see an example of one here) and Tucker Carlson videos be removed from the platform. In fact, if Facebook didn’t comply, Biden officials became "outraged.” This ultimately led Facebook to capitulate to the Biden administration and change its policies. The American people deserve transparency as to how the Biden administration is seeking to turn the federal government into an Orwellian “Ministry of Truth,” and House Republicans will continue to follow the facts where they lead us.
Natural Resources
Offshore oil and gas oversight
Yesterday, the Energy and Mineral Resources Subcommittee had an oversight hearing examining the Biden administration’s record on offshore leasing. Biden’s Department of Interior has categorically failed in its job to issue a new five-year program for offshore oil and gas leasing, while also holding up new lease sales and causing delays in permitting. This puts the future of domestic energy production in America at risk, and in turn, our national security. When American energy producers can’t properly plan out or invest in new projects, it hurts American workers and American families. Our witnesses were all from the Gulf area, and some of them work firsthand in the offshore industry. They reiterated how important it is to have clear direction from the federal government in planning and holding lease sales. Our minority witness, who was a supporter of offshore wind instead of oil and gas, admitted that he believes we should be mining for critical minerals here in America, as opposed to getting them from places like Communist China. This hearing reinforced the importance our offshore industry plays in supplying our nation with affordable and reliable energy, and while it is unfortunate that this White House continues to throw up barriers at every turn, Republicans on the Natural Resources Committee are committed to doing everything we can to ensure a strong energy future in America. I hope my colleagues listened closely to this testimony – and will keep an open mind when it comes to getting our domestic energy production back on track. You can watch the hearing here.
Recent Legislation
PROTECT-ing the Second Amendment
During my time in Congress and the state legislature, I have always made it a priority to protect everyone’s right to keep and bear arms. Unfortunately, some landlords and rental property managers have been infringing and discriminating on their tenants’ Second Amendment freedoms. This has been a problem for far too long, which is why I joined my colleague Rep. Randy Feenstra (IA-04) in reintroducing the Preserving Rights Of Tenants by Ensuring Compliance To (PROTECT) the Second Amendment Act. This necessary legislation would protect the gun rights of tenants who reside in federally assisted rental housing properties – allowing them to protect themselves and exercise their constitutional rights. You can read more about the legislation here.
District Update
Amery record-breaker
The past weekend, Alicia Monson broke the American record in the 5,000 meters – finishing with a time of 14 minutes and 19.45 seconds. Since her days at Amery High School, she has been setting new records, and this certainly won’t be her last. In February, she broke the North American indoor record in the 3,000 meters, and in March, she set a new North American 10,000 meters record. This week, I congratulated Alicia on the floor of the House of Representatives. You can watch it here.
Photo of the week
This week, western Wisconsin and in particular, the Hudson community was hit hard by heavy rain, large hail, and gusts of winds up to 85 mph. My prayers go out to all who were impacted by this severe storm. You can see just how strong the winds were as they knocked over this large tree. As a reminder, if you would like to have a photo featured in the Telegram, please submit it to [email protected].
