Democrat,
This week, we celebrated the 33rd anniversary of the passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)–the fundamental law protecting the rights of people with all types of disabilities, both physical and mental. However, even with these protections in place, we still have a lot of work to do.
While the ADA has undoubtedly made significant strides in promoting accessibility, inclusivity, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities, there are still challenges that require our ongoing attention and advocacy. Raising awareness and promoting disability rights education remain critical aspects of the journey toward full inclusion. By collaborating with policymakers, disability rights organizers, businesses, and communities, we can work together to overcome the remaining challenges.
NJDSC’s Disability Caucus will be launching later this month, so sign up here if you’d like to get involved.
This week we also celebrated the should-be national holiday, New Jersey Day! From leading the nation in gun safety, education, and more, we feel sorry for anyone who doesn’t call the Garden State home. I am proud to stand with Governor Murphy and all the legislative Democrats who work every day to make New Jersey stronger and fairer for all! |
Governor Murphy announced this week that he will lead a nine-day, multi-country economic mission to East Asia in October, including visits to Japan and South Korea. New Jersey is home to the fourth highest percentage of Asian Americans of any state in the nation, with a population of nearly one million Asian American residents, including over 100,000 Korean Americans.
This trip will continue to strengthen the economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties between our state and the East Asia region by bolstering foreign investment, promoting trade opportunities, and forging partnerships with businesses and industries in Japan and South Korea. This will benefit both New Jersey and the East Asian nations and will provide an opportunity for Governor Murphy to acknowledge the contributions to our state's diversity and prosperity, and explore avenues for further collaboration and support.
“Japan and South Korea have long been some of New Jersey’s most vital economic, academic, and cultural partners,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “I look forward to leading a large New Jersey delegation to these vital trading partners this fall to reaffirm our longstanding ties and make the case for New Jersey as the best place to expand and grow a business.”

Amid extreme heat waves rolling across the country and the world, President Biden announced new actions this week to protect workers and communities from the dangers of consistent heat exposure, including the release of Heat.Gov - a web portal source of heat and health information intended to reduce the health, economic, and infrastructural impacts of extreme heat.
For years, heat has been the number one cause of weather-related deaths in America and workers, including farmworkers, farmers, firefighters, and construction workers, are disproportionately impacted by extreme heat. President Biden has asked the Department of Labor (DOL) to issue the first-ever Hazard Alert for heat, affirming that workers have heat-related protections under federal law.
While Republicans in Congress continue to deny the very existence of climate change, peddle conspiracy theories, and remain committed to repealing the President’s Inflation Reduction Act – the biggest climate protection bill ever – Democrats know that the effects of extreme heat will only continue to grow in intensity, frequency, and duration because of the climate crisis and we are taking action to protect the health and safety of our workers and communities.
Additionally, with more excessive heat predicted for New Jersey, which can be dangerous for certain people - especially those without access to air conditioning or reliable water – New Jersey has designated cooling centers in areas across the state to provide a comfortable environment and access to essential resources to beat the heat. You can use this link to find the closest cooling center and ensure you and your loved ones can stay protected from the extreme temperatures.
