Dear John, In the aftermath of Storm Dennis, it’s time to re-imagine our relationship with the natural world. That’s why I’m asking you to sign my petition to make beavers a native species once again, so that they can play a part in natural flood management. Beavers were hunted to extinction in the UK centuries ago, but some have recently been released back into the wild in some areas of the country. After a five-year trial in Devon, we now know that beavers can help prevent flooding by building dams, holding water and slowing the flow before floods hit towns and villages. I know this is far from the only thing we need to do in response to disasters like Storm Dennis. We must also invest in local authorities, responsibly manage the uplands, and deliver a Green New Deal. But now the Devon findings have been published, our Government is weighing up whether or not to bring back beavers across all of England right now. Let’s make sure they know they have our support, so beavers can enrich our countryside once again. Please sign the petition to bring back beavers and thank you for taking action with me today. Amelia Womack PS. Join the Green Party today and help hold the government to account in protecting our environment and taking serious action on climate chaos. |
