Dear John,
Big Dairy wants to rewrite labels for plant-based milk.
The dairy industry has already tried to restrict makers of oat, soy, and other types of plant-based milk from using the word "milk," claiming it misleading. The industry lost that fight in February, when the FDA stated that consumers could clearly tell the difference.
The increasing popularity of plant-based milk has the dairy industry desperate. In fact, the global plant-based dairy market is predicted to reach $123.20 billion by 2029, growing by 15.5% each year.
The dairy industry's next target? Nutritional statements.
The FDA will soon issue labeling guidelines for plant-based milk. One recommendation would be to add a statement on labels for dairy-free milk that compares its nutrient levels with those of cow's milk.
Under these guidelines, this extra information would be optional and added only to plant-based milk. The dairy industry wants it to be mandatory.
