John, a disturbing trend is growing across the country where our efforts to transform the justice system have taken root. Please stick with us for a minute. This is critical to understand.

Wherever we have successfully elected a civil rights-minded District Attorney, conservatives and police unions have launched attacks against them – disguised as campaigns about public safety. Remember, these are DAs who won the will of the people, fair and square.

But conservatives’ attacks – via recall efforts and attempts to strip DAs of their powers – have never been about public safety. They’ve been about power.

For context, they have now tried to pass bills that strip DAs of their power in 17 states! In recent years, just under 40 such bills have been introduced.

They may have framed their attacks in terms of supporting victims. But the strongest support for civil rights-minded DAs comes from the most disenfranchised communities – people of color and the poor who’ve suffered the brunt of violence.

It’s our civil rights-minded DAs who are winning the votes of victims, not conservatives and police.

But if we don’t level up our fight to defend our Real Justice DAs, their attacks could likely succeed. We would lose big, for the millions of people in their districts and our communities across the country.
