The Trump administration seems determined to violate human rights at any opportunity. The cruelty is the point—the Trump administration and the Republicans who support it believe that criminalizing and harming people will make them more popular. Immigrants, especially those who are undocumented, are often the targets of this cruelty.
Just recently, we learned that DHS is sending militarized Border Patrol units to sanctuary cities to carry out routine detentions of undocumented people. Community organizations in California have called this move a scare tactic designed to further disenfranchise and criminalize the immigrant community.
Here in San Francisco, we refuse to stand for that. We resisted ICE last year, and we are doing it again with Border Patrol. This weekend, we joined the immigrants’ rights organizers of California in speaking out against the militarized Border Patrol presence and pledging to respond with power, not panic.
Our mantra in times of crisis is “power, not panic.” Do not participate in spreading unsubstantiated rumors on social media about ICE or Border Patrol presence in communities. This seriously harms the community by forcing people to skip work and other important activities for fear of leaving their house.
Instead, make note of your local Rapid Response Network (in San Francisco, that’s 415-200-1548) and call them if you see an ICE raid to report it. You can also order ILRC red cards to pass out so that people know their rights in case of an ICE raid.

We have to go on the offensive to build power. It’s time to start building a robust legislative agenda that sets the US government on the path to respecting human rights. Passing laws that force the US to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, create a Global Migration Agreement Act, and stop arming human rights abusers will have broad positive repercussions both abroad and in the way we treat people at home. Rep. Omar’s Pathway to PEACE plan includes these initiatives and more.
Call your MoC’s and tell them to support Rep. Omar’s Pathway to PEACE plan.
And while we’re here, other important opportunities to build power are coming up.
Get ready for our 2020 General Assembly!
On Tuesday, February 25, at 7pm, join us at the Women’s Building for our 2020 General Assembly. RSVP to our 2020 General Assembly here.
Indivisible SF sprang up three years ago to resist the Trump/Republican agenda, and we’ve been fighting since then with all our might. Whether you’ve attended every meeting or want to find out for the first time what we’re about, join us for our General Assembly to assess what we’ve accomplished – and make plans for what may be the most important election cycle of our lives.
This year we will:
- Work to get out the vote for key campaigns
- Influence our elected representatives and hold them accountable
- Advocate for critical issues and educate voters about them
- And join the battle to save American democracy
If you want to do all these things, then come hear about all the big and small ways you can get involved with us! Nothing fights frustration and despair like being part of an active community that’s fighting together. We can’t wait to see you there! RSVP to our 2020 General Assembly here.
Then… Join our friends at Courage California on February 29th at Manny’s for an evening promoting their statewide Voter Guide for 2020!
And… save the date for Indivisible CA: State Strong lobby day in Sacramento on April 27th! Indivisible CA: State Strong is a coalition of Indivisibles in California focused on state legislation. If you’re interested, join them and come to the lobby day!
