Oldham Council saves residential home

Earlier this year the council was made aware by the owner that Chadderton Total Care was facing financial difficulties following challenging times for the health and care sector.

Sadly this situation deteriorated further and the home went into administration with a significant risk of closure putting 200 staff including nurses specialist support workers and front-line carers’ jobs at risk.

Around 100 residents many with complex needs requiring specialist nursing care would have had to be relocated probably outside the borough away from families.

The council considered that this would have a highly negative impact on the wellbeing and health of the residents as well as resulting in a loss of jobs and so the Cabinet agreed that the council should step in to protect both staff and residents.

Oldham Council Leader, Cllr Arooj Shah said: “Keeping people employed and vulnerable residents safe is our priority here so I’m glad that we’ve been able to make that happen."

Brand-new space for arts and culture gets the go-ahead from the council's Cabinet

Plans have been approved plans for an exciting new public space within Oldham’s Cultural Quarter - meaning a new open area for arts and events is now set to be developed.

Close to the proposed new theatre, the library, and the Old Library, the space will be able to hold an outdoor stage and will also be adaptable to suit activities such as outdoor arts classes, theatre performances, and more.

The aim is that the space will become the "heart" of Oldham's growing Cultural Quarter, bringing together the three key buildings – the current Library and Gallery, the restored Old Library which is set to open in early 2025, and the new theatre, which is expected to open in 2026.

Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “This is great news for residents, community groups, and visitors to Oldham, who will soon have a fantastic new outdoor space for arts and culture that everyone can enjoy - right at the heart of our new Cultural Quarter "

The Council has been awarded more than £3.8m to improve streets, pavements and bridges across the borough - supporting the needs of residents, motorists and businesses across Oldham.

Injuries are falling on Oldham’s roads – but we can all do our bit to make them even safer

Oldham’s roads are getting safer for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.

Last year, the number of incidents, which resulted in someone reporting they had been injured, decreased by 36 percent compared to the previous 12 months.

The figures, released by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), show that the number of incidents has fallen from 336 to 214 – the best annual reduction across Greater Manchester.

The reopening of Emmott Way will help ease traffic congestion in the town centre while the ongoing essential works on Oldham Way are being carried out.

It also means the experimental road closures on Robson St, Bridge St, and Greenhill Passage are no longer needed.

Small changes to the borough's licenced vehicles

Over the coming months taxi and private hire passengers will see small changes to how the borough’s fleet of licensed vehicles look.

Following a decision by the council’s licensing committee – which has been supported by the taxi industry – the positioning of identification plates and operator logos on the vehicles will change.

Oldham Council licensed vehicles will now only display a rear licence plate.

This plate will provide the licence number, vehicle registration number, expiry date, number of passengers allowed and the vehicle make and model

Half-term summer activities for kids

It is now the summer holidays and there are lots of free activities your family access for free over the next few weeks.

This is thanks to a new universal activity programme that Oldham Council has created to support households amid financial pressures created by the cost of living.

Activities include everything from cinema screenings and theatre shows to outdoor activities and swimming.

Love Parks Week is back. Oldham has some of the best parks and green spaces around so why not take the chance to explore them?

Whether it’s walking the dog, picnicking with friends, or pushing your little ones on a playground swing, parks give our communities vital space to play, enjoy and get some fresh air

Love Parks Week celebrates and supports the efforts of volunteers and workers up and down the country to maintain and protect our green spaces.

Our staff clean and maintain our 32 parks and open spaces regularly.

Signed up to the Oldham Halloween Half?

Oldham's half marathon, one of the toughest 13.1-mile races in the UK, returns this Halloween after more than three years away.

More than 200 runners have already signed up to take part in the challenge, with the course’s hilly terrain promising to get pulses racing throughout.

The route may be gruesome, but it revels in spectacular scenery and the atmosphere is set to be electric – it's an event not to be missed.
