My friend,

Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn...

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL

Protecting animal welfare has been a personal passion of mine since my time in the New York State Assembly. I was proud to join the ASPCA, a bipartisan group of colleagues and award-winning actor Bellamy Young in pushing for the consideration of my legislation, the Goldie's Act, to protect those without a voice and hold animal abusers accountable. If enacted, our bill will save the lives of innocent animals being abused and neglected.

As someone who proudly represents a large Jewish population, it was an honor to be selected by Speaker McCarthy to escort Israeli President Isaac Herzog into the House Chamber for his historic and brilliant speech in honor of the 75th anniversary of Israel this month.

Despite recent ignorant and antisemitic rhetoric by some far-left members in our chamber, Israel is one of our country's strongest allies and a key strategic partner in the Middle East.

When it comes to PBMs, there’s little to no transparency on their practices, and they’re making a lot of money by inflating costs for consumers and putting ‘Mom & Pop’ pharmacies, that are often also their competitors, out of business by dictating how patients can get medication and how much pharmacies get reimbursed for dispensing medication. I’m pleased to see the Ways and Means Committee push this commonsense legislation forward so we can protect patients from the exploitative pricing techniques of PBMs and work to make prescription drugs more affordable.

WATCH MY INTERVIEW ON GOOD DAY NY

My language to kill New York City's $23 Congestion Tax was approved by the House Appropriations Committee. If successful, my language would effectively halt congestion pricing in its tracks by stripping away the federal government's ability to help the city and state get it over the finish line. As this provision works through the legislative process, our bipartisan Anti-Congestion Tax Caucus also stands in support of new lawsuits that have been launched to prevent this scheme from ever coming to fruition.

At a time when Americans are struggling to make ends meet, it's critically important for Congress to be coming together in a bipartisan and bicameral manner to implement pro-growth economic policies to reduce inflation, cut wasteful spending and allow the middle-class to keep more of their hard-earned money. I'm honored House Speaker Kevin McCarthy appointed me to be on the Joint Economic Committee and to be part of these important conversations to ensure an economically stable and more prosperous future for all Americans.

The Boy Scouts of America is a wonderful organization that teaches our young people about civics, community service, volunteerism, and teamwork. I was proud to join some of our Staten Island scouts earlier this month to announce that we’ve been able to secure $50,000 in federal funding to support the children who are participating in scouting camps and programs across Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn. I’m very proud that at a time when we need more young people to take part and learn about civics, these young people are exemplifying true leadership and true love for our community!

I joined former Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney on a tour of Mount Sinai's Staten Island World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) Clinic. I'm a proud cosponsor of bipartisan legislation to address the WTCHP's impending budget shortfall that's being caused by the rapid rise in overall medical costs and cancer rates. I encourage my colleagues to pass this bill as quickly as possible to keep Mount Sinai's clinic and other Clinical Centers open and support the brave men and women who put their lives on the line and survived the worst terror attack in our nation's history.

I commemorated the 70th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice with our local veterans and Korean-American community. As these veterans get older, it’s important our youth learns of their sacrifices so these ceremonies continue & their heroism is never forgotten.

IN THE NEWS

My office will once again be participating in the Congressional App Challenge that engages the bright, young minds of our middle and high school students through STEM, coding, and computer science. To learn more about challenge rules or how to apply, click below.

House passes bill barring the use of US public schools as migrant shelters while Adams deals with NYC’s crisis

“There are more illegal immigrants being housed in NYC than homeless New Yorkers,” Malliotakis wrote on Twitter Tuesday.

In a speech from the House floor, the 11th Congressional District rep argued that school facilities should be preserved for children to use and not be taken away from them.

“Children should be learning [in school]. They lost two years of socialization, physical fitness and interactions – thanks to COVID,” Malliotakis said. “And now [Adams] wants to take away the school gym. To anyone who says this is a manufactured crisis, look at New York City, because it is happening there.”
