Hello Democrats of Indian River. This week we are sharing updates and calls to action on reproductive rights, voting rights and an opportunity to join us for this year's International Coastal Clean Up event. Our volunteer lead office remains open Tuesday to Thursday every week from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stop in to say hello, sign your ballot petitions and learn more about volunteer opportunities. Also, be sure to stay informed with the latest stories by following Democrats of Indian River on Facebook.
REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS UPDATE
The Florida Supreme Court will finally hear the ACLU lawsuit challenging Florida's 15-Week Ban. The effective date of Florida’s 6-week abortion ban legislation is tied to the Florida Supreme Court ruling on a case challenging the constitutionality of the 15-week abortion ban passed last year. That lawsuit argues that the 15-week abortion ban violates the Florida Constitution’s broad right to privacy. Oral argument has been set for Friday, September 8, 2023, at 9:00 AM.
Because we fear the Florida Supreme Court won't strike down the 15-week ban, Floridians Protecting Freedom is proceeding with the petition drive to get explicit abortion protection in the FL Constitution that can’t be ignored. Floridians Protecting Freedom has collected 484,305 petitions in the two months since the campaign launched, with just over 88,000 of those being collected by volunteers!
The Democrats of Indian River headquarters is a ballot petition hub. Drop off your petition with us or stop by and we will provide one for you.
House Democrats have introduced a bill to make democracy MORE not LESS inclusive. This is in sharp contrast with MAGA Republicans, who recently introduced a voter intimidation bill designed to make it more difficult for Americans to vote. Send an email directly to Congressman Bill Posey, urging him to fight against the voter suppression and intimidation that has become a core aspect of House Republicans.
