5 Tips to Kick-Start Your Campaign Branding

At a recent AAPC webinar, experts shared tips on finding the right message (what you say) + voice (how you say it) to create a winning brand. Here are 5 things to keep in mind:

1. A Picture’s Worth People care more about your candidate’s photo than you think. Try testing out different poses, background locations, outfits, etc.

2. Authenticity Wins You can have a great message, but if your voice is off it won’t resonate with voters. Voters are (typically) choosing the candidate that is most authentic.

3. Follow the Leaders High profile politicians drive political design trends (think AOC, Biden-Harris, and the Trump campaign logos).

4. Save Time & Money Start designing your logo in black and white. Once you’ve landed on a design you can start playing around with different colors. Saves a lot of time and headache.

5. Go Long Don’t be afraid to go long! Have faith in our voters. If you take the time to present it in a creative way, voters will read your long form branding!

SAG-AFTRA Political Commercial Waiver Update

The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists' (SAG-AFTRA) special waiver for internet and new media use for political ads is not affected by the strike. The waiver is still active and can be used.

The waiver, updated in 2022, addresses wild spot use, placing ads on your candidate's website or social media, streaming digital use, and payment structure. Additionally, commercials for Presidential elections are excluded. The waiver is between your company and SAG-AFTRA, not through AAPC so you will need to notify SAG-AFTRA of use.

If you will be using the waiver or if you have additional questions about this waiver, please contact Ryan Hastings at and Colin Bouchard at .

What Trends Will Emerge During the First ChatGPT Election?

During AAPC’s webinar this week, panelists shared their observations on how AI tech will be used in the lead up to election day:

  • We’re seeing AI being used and embedded in so many of the software programs we are already using (i.e. Microsoft Co-Pilot). It’ll definitely become more a part of our daily lives.
  • GPT4 has a code interpreter feature, basically a data scientist in your pocket. It’ll be an extremely useful tool for anyone who spends all of their time pouring over spreadsheets.
  • ChaptGPT essentially gives you 10 extra staffers. It’ll be interesting to see which campaign managers will rise to the top with the help of artificial intelligence.

The output is only as effective as what you put into the system. Prompt engineering tips include:

  • ChatGPT is a technology that needs very specific instructions. Think about it as a person that you have hired and let it know its role before typing in a prompt. For example, if you're using it for a software engineering task, try something like, “You are a resourceful software engineer and I need ___.”
  • Don’t always accept the first response it gives you. If it doesn’t tell you what you want in the first go or it’s not formatted correctly, let it know. This chatbot is designed to be conversational and have back-and-forth with you.
  • Give it as much detail as possible in the initial prompt and tell it how many characters you want. Talk to it like you’re talking to a 10-year-old. The more specific you are up front, the less time you have to spend editing out the unnecessary information.
